I’m a little confused how to weigh in on this one.
On the one hand you’ve got the option to dump booze down your throat all night until you’re totally content and/or your wallet id empty. Good for you.. good for bars.
On the other hand.. are we gunna have to wait until 1:30 for headlining bands to come on if the venue is open till 4?
I’m NOt so down with that.

I understand your feelings … however my incite would concert this mandate would allow bar owners to control the closing time so as to “ease” drunks out of the bar instead of kicking them out wasted with a good luck wave. This is especially important for the liability of the bartenders that could face charges if a patron kills someone or themselves after leaving the establishment intoxicated.

And Kevin I understand about the 1:30 slot for bands, but as a “headliner” myself I know there are times when the night runs late and suddenly your set is cut to 3 songs due to closing time. And just think it could start a whole new festival craze of 24 hours of solid music … well the last idea not so much but you get the point.

Yeah, I’ve heard the everyone easing out of the bar argument. My question is, what the hell bartender is going to want to hang around with a bunch of drunk assholes who are no longer making them a lick of money – who only want to milk the 2 beers they bought at last call and try desperately to get their tongues into each other.
They’re just going to all make a mad dash at 4:00 instead of 2.

Bankrupt concept. Whether now or three weeks ago.

I think it’s an interesting idea that may or may not work. If you read the proposal, most of the specifics haven’t even been flushed out yet. It wouldn’t be a mandate that every bar HAD to stay open all night, I’m assuming the bars/clubs that wanted to would apply for a permit stating they’d have flexible bar times on let’s say Friday and Saturday night. It seems like a really pro-business initiative. If it’s not working out for the businesses, if they’re not making money, they’ll shut it down. I think the city government is giving each establishment the flexibility to make their own decision.

All that said, I’d be shocked if it passed the Washington State Liquor Control Board.

Once living in Chicago where the bars are open til 4am, it’s really not a big deal. Most bars still close at 2, bands still follow a regular schedule. However real dives where people are sooo drunk are still open and some dance clubs too. There is also this fun country bar called Carole’s that is open late nite as well. So not much changes and for the people who think 2am is just too early to head home, they have options.

I think if bars were actually allowed to serve until they decide to close, this would make much more sense. If not it’s just going to require much more policing from the SPD and the unfortunate bartenders on late-night shift.
