Blue Giant @ Sonic Boom
July 19th, 2010
I went down to the Capitol Hill Sonic Boom last Thursday to catch the free in-store performance of Blue Giant. Led by the guitar-slingin’ couple of Viva Voce, Blue Giant is a newish band out of Portland swingin’ sweet, melancholic country rock. Kevin and Anita Robinson, it seems, just couldn’t get the native Alabama out of their system without taking a turn towards the honkey-tonk. I’m a big fan of VV’s last album, Rose City, which is full of nasty and nimble psych rock, but I’d never seen Blue Giant live. Their performance was convincing, even if for only the 15 or 20 people that showed up. Which was too bad, really, because as I’ve said before, watching Anita play guitar is really something else. And not just because she’s a female or whatever, but just because she has such an eloquently loose way of churning out interesting and unique guitar leads. I come away from their shows impressed every time.

Anyway, here’s probably their new record’s most rockin’ tune, “Blue Sunshine”. Kevin plays an electric banjo and Anita comfortably does her thang:
