Hugo House: Happy Hour Hero and the Word

Friday, March 19, 2010
7:30 pm

.
The Hugo House presents the Hugo Literary Series: four evenings of risk and reward, featuring brave new writing commissioned by Hugo House from some of the most exciting local and national writers and musicians working today. The fourth event in the series is themed for Laws of Attraction and will feature the music of Happy Hour Hero in between readings from Marya Sea Kaminski, Phillip Lopate, and Emily Warn.
.

Now, I know you might be thinking it’ll be a subdued, hushed evening as the poets whisper into the microphone, people sip espresso, and the band gently strums acoustic guitars without first doing the, “Can you hear me in the back?” check. That is not the case. I’ve been to a few of these shows. The readings will be lively, the booze (complete with jello shots) cheap, and the band rocking.
.

Happy Hour Hero
.

Friday, March 19, 2010 – 7:30pm
Tickets are available through brownpapertickets.com, or by calling (800) 838-3006.
Price: $15.00 – $25.00
*This event takes place at the University of Washington’s Kane Hall.

SXSW Sendoff Bash at Neumos

Friday, March 5, 2010
8:00 am

.
I suppose in these parts we all know what SXSW is, the revered and glorious musiclal festival down Texas way, down in Austin where no bands of mine have ever played, though I did go to a wedding there once. No worries on not ever playing there though. I don’t think any bands of mine have ever even applied to SXSW. Perhaps we’ve been lazy. I suppose it’s like what they say about the lotto, can’t win if you don’t play, or rather can’t play if you don’t fill out said application with said application fee. And well, it seems a few of the local musical groups have done just that. And they won! I’m envious. As much as I like recording and studio work, live is the thing, live is where we strike the chords that set nights on fire.
.

Visqueen And well getting back to SXSW, this weekend at Neumos there is a SXSW Sendoff Bash featuring Visqueen, Hey Marseilles, Mash Hall (formerly known as They Live!), and Fences. I haven’t seen the other bands, but Visqueen alone is worth the price of admission. I saw them at Easy Street Records in Queen Anne, and even on the horrible PA there they were a little pop, a little punk, and a whole lot of fun. I don’t suppose they’ll talk about That Great Gig at Easy Street, but they may just do so of Neumos, or if you’re in the mood for a serious road trip, SXSW.

SXSW, That Great Gig in the Sky, Monster Grand, Visqueen at Neumos

I suppose in these parts we all know what SXSW is, the revered and glorious musiclal festival down Texas way, down in Austin where no bands of mine have ever played, though I did go to a wedding there once. No worries on not ever playing there though. I don’t think any bands of mine have ever even applied to SXSW. Perhaps we’ve been lazy. As much as I like recording and studio work, live is the thing, live is where we strike the chords that set nights on fire.
.

VisqueenI heard Pink Floyd on the radio today, Money, not their best tune, but thinking as I was about SXSW and playing live I was reminded of another Pink Floyd tune, That Great Gig in the Sky. An old band of mine in Ohio played that at a few gigs. The keyboard player, Stephanie, suggested it during a soundcheck one night before a gig at The South Heidelberg (RIP) so we gave it a shot. It was an instrumental version as neither Stephanie nor our other singer/drummer, Frank, had any chance of hitting those beautiful notes Clare Torry did in the recording.
.

I remember clearly that first night we played it. Stephanie called out the chords during the sound check, and I wrote them on a piece of paper that I put on the stage in front of my bass amp. There was a foot print on the left side of the paper, and the paper itself was actually stuck in place given all the grime of spilled beer and cigarette ash and marijuana ash and whatever else on the stage. We’d just finished one of our songs, In Memory of Sir Dane Bramage, a lament for a lost bong, and Stephanie went right into the piano intro for That Great Read the rest of this entry »

Hollow Earth Radio (HER) is curating its popular 3rd Annual Magma Festival next month, and will feature the online radio station’s signature hyper-eclecticism of local earthed (Dylan Carlson of Earth!) and unearthed (Emeralds!) acts. The “festival” is spread out over the four weekends of March (easy to keep track of, no?) and across several different locations touting varying degrees of renown. The Vera Project, The Fremont Abbey, the Healthy Times Fun Club, and the Henry Art Gallery are among the more prominent venues, while the Mine, 20/20 Cycle, The In, Kenyon Hall, and Shafer Baillie Mansion are among the less reputed.

.

So, local music-loving geeks, whatever your schedule or taste, you’re likely to find something here to suit your fancy. Might I suggest (obviously) the inaugural lineup at the Vera Project on March 5th? Folk-rockin’ frontwoman Thao Nguyen plays with local one-man sonic tribalist Alaskas, Deception Pass, and Grr. Or might I suggest the Eruption Show at the Mine on March 27th with an absolute crap load of bands that I know little about but might favor for a joyous time? Good, thank you.

.

The poster’s type is kinda small, so click it for largeness or visit the site for more links and details. Show prices range from $6-$15, but you can buy a $50 pass that gets you into all the shows. Proceeds will benefit the radio station in specific and the DIY community in general.

.

SUPPORT IT OR THEY WILL ABORT IT! (I just made that up.)

Virgin Islands, Unnatural Helpers, Little Cuts and Male Bonding @ Sunset

Friday, March 5, 2010
8:00 pm

Holy Mother, my head’s about to implode with excitement.
.

Last weekend was an overload of great Seattle rock-n-rollah. For you sorry sum-bitches that missed Virgin Islands at the Comet or Unnatural Helpers at the Funhouse, it’s OK. The Sunset Tavern has the cure for your pain (And trust me, I KNOW your pain). Friday, March 5th you can get everything last weekend offered, and THEN some.
.

It’s hard to even fathom that this is all happening in one night on one stage in one little bar in Ballard. The line-up here looks like the bill for a mini-festival.
.

If you’re looking for me between sets, I’ll be over at the Smoke Shop catching my breath.

.

Friday, March 5th @ the Sunset Tavern
Male Bonding
Unnatural Helpers
Virgin Islands
Little Cuts

The Lonely Forest @ Neumos

Tuesday, March 2, 2010
8:00 pm

Establishing themselves in 2006 as a prime young band to watch as winners of the highly coveted EMP Sound Off! Competition, The Lonely Forest, from the small town of Anacortes, WA, have spent the last few years experimenting with a variety of sounds – from pop-rock to piano driven ballads about a fictional character in the future, the band had the press exclaiming they’d “created a new world of their own, an alternate dimension” and are “poised to be one of Seattle’s next breakout acts”.

.

With their newest release, We Sing The Body Electric!, set to release on April 21st, 2009 through Burning Building Recordings, the band has abandoned the experimental rhetoric of their previous release(s) and fully embraced their knack for writing unforgettable and realized pop songs. Led by John Van Deusen on guitar, keys, and vocals, Braydn Krueger on drums, Eric Sturgeon on bass, and re-adding Tony Ruland on guitar, The Lonely Forest have crafted what will surely be one of the top NW releases of the year. As Jack Endino stated, “these guys came out of nowhere and blew my mind!”
