Broke his hip. Never made it out of the hospital.
That might not be entirely accurate, but something along those lines.

In the seven years I’ve lived here, it was impossible to go out and not run into him on the streets, at the Broadway liquor store, at the old cha cha or the comet. Always with the leather jacket and black hat.
