We Were Promised Jetpacks [from Scotland] @ Neumos Tonight! (3-2)
March 2nd, 2010
Last year Scottish band, Frightened Rabbit, came to Neumos with another great Scottish band, We Were Promised Jetpacks, opening for them. Now, We Were Promised Jetpacks returns to headline; and they deserve it! As an added bonus, local phenomenons, The Lonely Forest, will be opening.
.
First off, We Were Promised Jetpacks has a great name and secondly, have an atmospheric yet intense sound, coupled with the lead singers deep moving voice and Scottish accent; its good. Real good. And they traveled this far from Glasgow; just to see you!! (It would cost a lot more to fly there to see them).
.
Read more about the Lonely Forest, who won last year’s Sound Off competition here: http://www.seattlesubsonic.com/2010/02/16/the-lonely-forest-neumos/ . Everytime I miss them at a festival or show, I have to kick myself, because afterward I have to hear how they were one of the best shows of the night.

I witnessed The Lonely Forest embarrass headlining bands several times last year. I think that riding the wave of their recent major label signing last week, tonight will be no different.

Bear Hands should be fun. Sound a little of like USE or Natalie Portman’s Shaved Head. Going to be a real variety show!

Bear Hands=just ok. At their best with the more synthy dance beats. The vocalist tries too hard to summon Isaac Brock. The Lonely Forest put on another solid show. They had just signed their new recording contract hours before the show, and are heading back into the studio in a month with Chris Walla producing. Most of the show was new material for that album. I liked what I heard. We Were Promised Jet Packs…..snooze. I think I heard the same song 6 times in a row. Some of that might be that I was not very familiar with their catalog and didn’t much care for what I heard streaming via the old internet machine. Their sound was amazing I must say. Kudos to the soundguys at Neumos.

Nice that this show sold out on a Tuesday! I agree Bear Hands never grabbed me. Congrats to the Lonely Forest signing, but the crowd definitely left their energy for We Were Promised Jetpacks. Seeing L.F. for the first time, I became a big fan of the motley drummer and desired to hear Deusen banter with the crowd even more. It adds real down to earth personality to the band.
I didn’t know how I expected, WWPJ to sound, and I missed them last go around, though Frightened Rabbit was great. But I thought they had a huge finished sound, and an annoying intro. Some of the last songs were the best, the crowd was involved, and the singer, who looked more like a pub friend (than a singer) had a pretty moving voice (to me); plus the band has a lot of intensity. I had to move to the back. Great show all around.
