Seattle Subsonic - February, 2010
Scott H Biram @ the Tractor
| Friday, February 12, 2010 | ||
| 9:30 pm |
Scott H Biram IS the dirty ol one man band. His blues country repertoire is teetering on punk and is gritty and crunchy as hell. He’s got tin-can blues/rock sound that is just plain gutter filthy. It slides off his ’59 Gibson and gets stomped into your face with his rhythm section (aka his left boot).
Be prepared to ditch the PBR as there’s a pretty good chance you’re gunna be too busy danci’. I’d recommend Wild Turkey Shots.

Hot Chip Fans…
…You can currently stream the new record from these tech-soul savants on their myspace. It goes by the name of One Life Stand. I’m still digesting it, but there are (expectedly) some pretty filthy cuts. I think there might be a few you might not dig, too (you know, sometimes they get lost down that syrupy, slo-gaze rabbit trail). But for Hot Chip fans, this offering sees the band just as jittery and just as smooth as previously thought. Made In The Dark was pretty fuckin’ good, though, right? That’s gotta be worth something.
Alkaline Trio and Cursive together at Neumos
It is not every day that you can find a show of this caliber at a venue the size of Neumo’s. But, on February 20, 2010, Alkaline Trio and Cursive, two bands that regularly sell out the Showbox at the Market, will take to the stage at Neumos to rock our faces off. Fresh off of starting their own record label (Heart and Skull), a joint venture with Epitaph, Alkaline Trio sets out on this tour to support that release, This Addiction, which actually comes out three days after this show. Alkaline Trio started out on Asian Man Records in 1998, home of other such bands as Less Than Jake and Skankin Pickle. On the strength of two popular full-lengths, they moved on to Vagrant Records, where they began to receive wider acclaim. With the release of 2003′s Good Mourning, they reached a mainstream audience and had a single on the radio and MTV. As they moved away from their straight forward punk origins, and moved more towards a sound full of lyrics about death and the occult, their fame grew bigger and they became one of the biggest up and coming mainstream punk bands around. After a short stint on Epic Records, they find heir new home and hope to move closer to their roots, combining the production and themes that lead to their new found fame with the stylistic flair of the past. This makes their concerts even better, as they play the old songs with better musicianship and greater enthusiasm.

Omaha indie rock darlings Cursive join the bill, on tour to support their latest release, Mama, I’m Swollen. After several records on Saddle Creek that stormed the college charts, Cursive broke into wider acclaim with the release of 2003′s The Ugly Organ. The sullen, introspective story of an organist and the perils throughout his life, told in a daze of discordant musical genius, drew many new fans and exploded Cursive into a wider fan base. After their next album, Happy Hollow, fell flat, they stormed back on to the music scene with 2009′s Mama, I’m Swollen. It is back on top that they team up with Alkaline Trio for this tour.

This is going to be a great show, and it is not very often that we get a show of this caliber in the more intimate setting of a smaller venue, so come on out and enjoy a great night of music!

Nectar continues to be a Seattle hub for the smart, lyrical, and gritty indie rap that is exploding from Minnesota. Hosting first P.O.S. And Doomtree; and now, this Saturday, the hip hop duo, Eyedea & Abilities.
.
The MC Eyedea is a well known freestyler and and has proved himself to be one of the best underground battlers. DJ Abilities provides a strong back to those solid lyrics and has won awards for his mix tapes. They’re currently signed to Rhymesayers Entertainment, an indie hip hop label in Minneapolis, alongside other big acts like Atmosphere, MF DOOM, and P.O.S..
.
Their new album, By The Throat, features crisp powerful lyrics. A majority of tracks feature moving gritty beats packed full of energy and laid over with intense lyrics; and the rest of the beats are smooth danceable. I expect a high energy show. The show also features special guest, Dosh, an experimental electronica folk rock group out of Minneapolis.

Oh Yes, It’s Ladies Night, Oh Whatta Night
| Tuesday, February 9, 2010 | ||
| 8:00 pm |
Don’t see too many of these types of shows advertised, so in the name of all that is good and equal, you’re gonna damn well hear about!
.
Ladies Night goes down at Neumos February 9th, and decidedly leans to the hip-hop side of things (what doesn’t these days?). I haven’t seen any of these cats live yet (check that: I did catch Canary Sing on the Seattle Channel once; Art Zone with Nancy Guppy, ya’ll!), but word on the street is that the spaceified art-house jazz-rap THEESatisfaction utilizes tends to rock whatever structure is currently housing them. Snow Motion might be a bit asymmetrical for the typical consumer, but good portions of it flow quite nicely and I’m always down for some weird shit anyhow. Sample a couple of its tracks below.
.
Lisa Dank seems to be out for stardom, I do know that much about her. She’s a glam-conscious 21st Century product (see: “Social Networking”) with some saucy beats and sexed-up electro flava. The costumes are plenty and the pop is blatant; gentlemen, the Lady Gaga epoch is officially upon us. You can taste what the ladies in Canary Sing are pushin’ here.
.
And, no, Kool & the Gang won’t be making an appearance. I know, I know, it’s heartbreaking. Please watch this to mend your heart. Damn, those guys were good.

THEESatisfaction – “Cabin Fever”
Virgin Islands @ the Comet
| Saturday, February 20, 2010 | ||
| 9:00 pm |
Saturday Feb 20th, has a full slate of local rock all smashed into the Comet – likely to cause an implosion of awesome. Former lead man of the COPS (RIP) Mike Jaworski takes the front again with his newest and greatest project, Virgin Islands. They have only have a single EP, The Age of Anxiety listen here, recorded so far. I have to say, it’s righteous front to back and there is not a scrap of fat on it. Fast, furious, frantic rock-n-roll straight through.
.
Little Cuts, also on the bill, have quietly been putting together a fan-fuggin-tastic punk rock trio of their own. Consisting of former COPS bassist Drew (Droo) Church along with Dave Hernandez (of Shins fame) and Curtis James (Old Haunts) taking up the skins. Tight licks ranging from freight train to F-15. Say goodbye, face. This is a supernova of Seattle greats.

Who the fuck said Seattle rock was dead?
See you there.

The Album Leaf @ Neumos
| Saturday, February 6, 2010 | ||
| 8:00 pm |

Life as a traveling musician can become monotonous. Sleep, eat, perform. Load in, load out, pass out. Repeat. This is your day, and before you realize it, your life. After a decade of the three-step grind James LaValle the classically trained multi-instrumentalist whose tone poems have been collated as The Album Leaf since 1999decided to get off the well-worn path.
.
“A lot of traveling and time away from home, learning about yourself while losing yourself, that’s what has gone into recording for me,” “says LaValle. “Following a year-and-a-half of straight touring I took a break from worrying only about where The Album Leaf was going and instead concentrated on the best parts of what it’s been this entire time.”
.
If musicians could keep time in a bottle its consumption would likely outpace vodka and bourbon combined within the first year. Next to a comfortable place to sleep, time is the luxury few touring musicians are afforded. Time alone is even more rare. Following stints with instrumental artisans Tristeza, post-hardcore spastics the Locust, contorted punk-funk ritualists GoGoGo Airheart, shadowy conjurers The Black Heart Procession and is often a special guest of Iceland’s celestial menagerie Sigur Rós, LaValle recognizes this lifestyle and its constraints.
