Pavement is coming to a town near you!
September 17th, 2009
Yes, you heard me right! This news is really one of my dreams come true! After years of speculation, the 1990s indie darlings, Pavement, will be returning to the stage with the lineup of Mark Ibold, Scott “Spiral Stairs” Kannberg, Stephen Malkmus (the man with the dreamiest hair ever) , Bob Nastanovich and Steve West reuniting for dates around the world in 2010.
.
The first confirmed show will be September 21, 2010 at Rumsey Playfield in Central Park. According to Matador “Things worked out really well when Diana Ross played Central Park in 1983, and we have no reason to suspect Pavement’s return to the live arena won’t generate similar headlines.”. Still waiting to hear about when they’ll be in Seattle so stay tuned but if you’re interested in the New York show, a pre-sale begins tomorrow at 10AM EDT – password is “Zowee”.
.
Matador also emphasized that the tour is not a “prelude to additional jaunts nor a permanent reunion” so don’t get your undies in a bunch thinking this is a forever thing or that they’ll be recording new tracks. They will however be releasing a greatest hits compilation to support the tour. Hey, we’ll take anything we can get, right? B/c lemme tell you, I’m tired of seeing Steven Malkmus and people yelling out in the crowd to play Pavement songs when it’s the Jicks on stage.

First the Pixies.. then Pavement? It’s like my glory days are coming back in spades. I feel an Uncle Tupelo tour coming followed by a Folk Implosion reunion and finally topped off with Gene and Dean WEEN!! Yes, I know they’re still technically together, but Ween tops off everything!

Revoked my account? That’s the first I heard of that! Altho it took me a couple of tries before I remembered my password.

You know, for me, there hasn’t really been anything to write about. I’m not hearing any music I love. I guess that’s why I’ve been quiet.

Why was LB the only one that didnt go into summer music hibernation? Is it because of his sun allergies? I had to wait for the Fall festivals to disturb my slumber.

The only one?!? C’mon, Blog-itt, you know damn well music fans across the ENTIRE LAND were out in full force this summer season. Winter is for hibernation, my friend.

Are you referring to school children? KEXP Mural shows were good, but then I just saw 20 other venues with 7 nights of filler. Except for concerts in parks whose Ticket Master surcharge was more than the price of any Neumo’s show.

To each his own. I still think summer is anti-hibernation time.

It’s just that I just took on 6000 sq ft of responsibility with the new Subsonic Headquarters. I do it for YOU, ya know! Plus, I had tix to every day of Bumbershoot but fuggin SWINE FLU took me out of that game. That’s right, I can be your first celebrity swine flu survivor. (that is if you want to call me a celebrity.. and who doesn’t?!? I’ve been on YouTube, M-effers!! YEAH!)
And Tom, I think you may have the wrong wording there I think it might be hiatus, not hibernation. I was out every weekend, just not at music venues. Winter is time for music hibernation. Stick me in a corner of the Sunset until summer comes back and I’ll be happy.

Oh man, I don’t check in for a few days and the CLAWS COME OUT. Rrrrrroar. Revoking accounts, sun allergies, SWINE FLU, to fest or not fest, 6000 sq ft of responsibilty, sheeet.
What about PAVEMENT??? If they come to Seattle, which they probably will, I’ll imagine I’ll go, but honestly, I’m growing very, very jaded that every year, usually around Coachella time, we get to find out what band from our past is reuniting. Question. Has anyone ever seen a reunion show that has just totally exceeded expectations? I still think shows are best in the moment when the music was made. That said, I’m still bummed that I missed the My Bloody Valentine Show earlier in the year.

I caught Primus’ reunion tour when they played the entire Seas of Cheese album plus a few extras. Gotta say it definitely exceeded my expectations, especially considering the complete genre change les has taken in his career.
I’m really looking forward to hearing the Pixies match the energy but I’ll keep my hopes low.
Pavement has the benefit of always having been pretty low-key, so they just might pull it off in good fashion. Here’s to hopin’
