Former Shins Drummer, Jesse Sandoval, Talks About Getting Fired

August 6th, 2009

Shins fans: do you remember how cloak-and-dagger the band’s lineup shuffle felt when you first heard about it? Well, the band’s long-time drummer, Jesse Sandoval, also felt left in the dark when he realized no real announcement was coming about the supposed breakup from the band’s primary songwriter, and seemingly all-around-good-guy, James Mercer.

.

Sandoval, proud owner of a new taco truck in downtown Portland, spoke with the Portland Mercury recently and relayed his experience with the situation and his thoughts on Mercer and Mercer’s designs for the band. Read the interview here (there’s also a link to the entire transcript at the bottom). I won’t interpret too much, but I must admit, Mercer comes off as a bit of an inconsiderate cad. This is only Sandoval’s side of things, but I hardly doubt he’s fabricating anything.

.

The news isn’t so much shocking as it is plain interesting, but he did feel like he simply got “fired” by his friend of almost twenty years. He ends by saying he doesn’t want any part of an anti-Shins movement. Nor do I, but I do really want a HUGE PART of whatever he’s cookin’ up in that truck of his. And I ain’t lyin’.

Awesome! Not that he got fired, but that he opened a New Mexican food stand! I love sopapillas! I love green chile! I hate having to go to New Mexico to get it! I’m driving down from Seattle to get some!
