Natalie Portman’s Shaved Head: Currently Giving Me A Heart On

For some reason or another, I am TOTALLY GROOVIN’ to the debut record from Natalie Portman’s Shaved Head right now. Glistening Pleasure, which I’ve had for quite some time and have superficially enjoyed on many occasions, has invaded another level of my affection. It’s the perfect antidote to any sort of downtrodden shiznit you might be experiencing. Full of irascible sleaze, hot-tempered sass, and sardonic hilarity, I really have to try hard to not like the neo-funk electro blitz that these local hooligans dish up. Some of the shit that vocalists Luke Smith and Shaun Libman come up with is simply priceless (“Rock mom jeans / too high, too tight”; “I try to communicate / cuz I wanna procreate”; “Do you wanna go on the Tilt-A-Whirl? / C’mon girl / till ya hurl”). And keyboardist Claire England provides a flirty female presence, as the entire wording for “Mouth Full of Bones” is absolute magic.

Sure it’s cheesy, sure it’s borderline Lavigne/Paramore-esque manufactured pop, but these sexed-up young’uns actually know how to keep the music interesting and fucking danceable. I’d take them over U.S.E. any day. The snappy guitars ranging from fiery funk to post-punk, the anthemic synths and slick beats, the Hot Chip-reminiscent white-boy R&B, the 80’s-style old-skool rap that seeps into their verses; no wonder Lily Allen wanted them for her tour.

Anyway, below is their rad video for “Sophisticated Sideways Ponytail”, which is, like, who-knows-how-many months old. But, I needed a reason to blog and you needed a reason to boogie.
