Seattle Subsonic - March, 2009
North Twin and Radio Nationals @ High Dive
| Friday, April 24, 2009 | ||
| 9:00 pm |
Two of Seattle’s best alt-country roots rockers light up the stage of the High Dive. Radio Nationals have been on hiatus for quite a while now and I’m not sure if this is a reinvenion, rebirth or just a reunion but we can only hope. North Twin is riding the wave of their latest release “Stronger in the Broken Places” which has been getting a lot of recognition on the KEXP and is a true country rockin piece.

Celebrity Orphans @ High Dive
| Wednesday, March 25, 2009 | ||
| 9:00 pm |
BC Campbell and the fellaz of The Celebrity Orphans are the highlight of this Wed night show at the High Dive in Fremont. While never having received much attention for the years of effort these guys have put in, I still think they’re one of the best Seattle outfits going. Celebrity Orphans are about to head out on a West Coast Tour and plan to hit it hard tonight! They go on at about 10:30.
.
The actual closer for this night is a band called Verse, but finding anything about a band named “verse” is like looking for information on a movie called “the” . Thus I have no idea what they’re like. Gonken appears second on the night and dubs himself as Safeway Select Justin Timberlake. Personally I think that’s hilarious. And his sound, while being a lo-fi version of electronica/punk (if that’s possible,) might not be the best you’ve ever heard but the self deprecation alone should be worth the effort. If you’re satisfied after hearing Celebrity Orphans you can still get some sleep for Thursday, or if the mystery of Verse inspires you.. stay all night.

Dyno Jamz takes the cake!
The hip hop/jazz fusion group Dyno Jamz ran away with the show this past (past) Saturday, March 7th taking both the overall title as well as the audience responce award for Sound off! 2009 at EMP. Their enthusiasm poured onto the floor of the packed Sky Church and got the crowd up and moving as they laid down their stylized mash-up sound. Zac Millan is the quintessential smooth MC on the mic, and Colin Pulkrabek takes the human beatbox into new dimentions after killin it on trombone (yeah…there’s 2 trombones!) Though Dyno Jamz opened the night in what proved to be an act that was impossible to follow, all finalists delivered top notch performances
.
SOL, a hip-hop artist from Seattle, came in second; Dearboy, a four-piece, all-girl band from Seattle – and also the “Wild Card” voted in by the fans – took third; and Makeup Monsters, an indie/post-punk duo from Tacoma, Wash. came in fourth.
.
Below is Dyno Jamz performance in Round 1. Check out our photos of the Finals here
.
.
As I mentioned previously, Sound Off! as well as being a killer event for Seattle’s youth to showcase their talents, is reknown as a launching pad for some of these bands giving them both needed exposure as well as piles of gear. Check out what the finalists take home for competing in this year’s event after the break.

Bobby Bare Jr @ Sunset Tavern
| Saturday, March 28, 2009 | ||
| 6:00 pm |
The Sunset welcomes the return of Bobby Bare Jr. (special early acoustic show) -
It’s guaranteed to be both heartbreaking and rockin-rollah all at once. Don’t expect the same show as what you might have seen with his backing band but do expect to leave satisfied.

Branden Daniel and EGL @ Sunset
| Thursday, March 19, 2009 | ||
| 9:00 pm |
Branden Daniel and Everyone Gets Laid crank out some of the most high energy, crunchy and delicious blues/rock I’ve ever heard. Slightly reminiscent of Jon Spencer, or PowerSolo. It’s the sort of stuff you’d expect to hear pouring out of a grimy taphouse in Memphis. I’m just glad we can get it here in our backyard.

If you dig, keep and eye out for thier new EP just released here and in Portland.

Jesus Christ Pose(r)
Seattle Prodigal Son, Chris Cornell, prepares to release the much marketed new record with producer Timberland.
.
When I first heard Justin Timberlake’s sophomore record, Future Sex /Love Sounds, I was really impressed by Timbalands production. Justine Timberlake is a pop star.
.
Chris Cornell on the other hand…
.
I spent a good portion of the evening making notes on how horribly wrong this record is. From Timbalands introduction of Cornell, MC style…to, well…
.
Chris Cornell, you betrayed all that is rock and you have made a mockery of the city and people you historically entrusted to be your support. I lower my head for the city of Seattle. When the titans fall… can they really continue to land on the merits of their back catalogue and the ferocity of their egos?
.
That’s actually my entire review.

I almost pissed myself laughing.
A Punk Rock Legend Comes to Seattle Tomorrow Night!
It’s not very often that a legend comes to Seattle. And yet, tomorrow night, just such an event is occuring. In fact, you don’t just get one legend, you get two! Tomorrow at the GRN STRP House in the U-District, Classics of Love and Mike Park will be playing with local favorites Dateless and the Damage Done. Classics of Love features the band Hard Girls (members of Shinobu and Pteradon) with the legendary Jesse Michaels of Operation Ivy and Common Rider fame. This is only the third time Jesse has played in Seattle (once each time with those bands), and people are driving from as far as Montana for the show!
.
Along with Classics of Love, Asian Man Records Founder Mike Park will be playing. You might remember him from bands like Skankin’ Pickle, the Chinkees, and The Bruce Lee Band. He was at the center of the third wave ska explosion way back when it was just getting started, and has continued to be a trend setter in terms of the music he plays and the albums he puts out on his label.
.
Throw in the fact that this is Dateless’ second to last Seattle show EVER, and you have to show up. In short, this is a show you wont want ot miss in one of the most intimate atmospheres you will ever see these artists! And all the money goes to the touring bands, so please come and support the local scene!

Who Doesn’t Like a Mobile Disco?
If you are feeling frisky this evening, head on over to Neumos and get your disco on with Simian Mobile Disco. These two UK dj/producers are kings of the dancefloor and masters in the art of the remix. They originally formed as a traveling dj team and released a few singles, but they gained more fame through their remixes of artists like The Go Team! and Air.
.
They are touring to support their new album that is untitled and doesn’t even have a release date yet (as far as I know). What I do know is that they have two new singles – Synthesise and 10,000 Horses Can’t Be Wrong – that are pretty dope and, judging from their live performance videos, they put on a pretty solid show. So get down there and prepare for some serious dance partying.
Here is a video for their latest single ’10,000 Horses Can’t be Wrong’

Now maybe, I didnt mean to treat you bad – But I did it anyway (free tix, yo!)
If you’re familiar with that title, then you were alive in the 90′s. For those of you suppressing the memory, it’s the opening line from ‘s “Far Behind” by Candlebox. A little Seattle band that formed here in the Emerald city in 1991 and began exploding onto every radio station across the US the very next year. And just about the time their CD’s were hitting the shelves in those huge cardboard boxes many of you were just hitting puberty. Ahh… puberty and rock and roll…

You know all about the back to back

Help Save Hell’s Kitchen TONIGHT
Hell’s Kitchen in Tacoma is in a world of hurt. It’s not because they don’t have good shows, because they do! And it’s not because the shows they have aren’t well attended, because the kids love HK! It’s because they need to install a state of the art sprinkler system that is ogoing to cost the club over $60,000 because they need to pay the City of Tacoma $25,000 just to get enough water pressure so that the new sprinkler system will operate. In light of this, the good folks over at SeattlePunk.org have put together a show with the intention of saving the club.
.
And yet, this is more than justa show. Sure, there will be great performances from bands like Neon Nights and the Hollow Points, including the third to last Pacific Northwest show for soon-to-be-defunct Seattle pop-punk legends Dateless, but there will be so much more. The night is co-sponsored by the Northwest Chapter of the Gypsy Queens, an organization whose motto is “tats not tits,” as they seek to promote a positive image of women who have tattoos. The girls present (and there will be a lot of them) will be posing for photos with all of you concert goings, with the pictures being snapped by SeattlePunk.org’s staff of professional photographers. And for those of you who want to get your drink on, they will have $1.50 tall cans! This is a night you wont want to miss, so hop in your car, or ride the Sounder, and head down to Tacoma to help prevent another important venue in our music scene from going under!
