Squirel Nut Zippers @ Triple Door
I know Squirrel Nut Zippers as the soundtrack of summers between college terms. Songs about burning in hell and sipping on lemonaide all seemed to somehow blend just perfectly. They were the first to hit the radio with that thowback ragtime style with songs that sounded like a punk band born in the 30′s working mandolins rather than electric guitars. I never got a chance to catch them back in the day, but now they’re coming to my favorite venue in Seattle.
.
Now while the ever more popular Andrew Bird was once a member, he won’t be joining this troop of original members. They will perform selections from the entire catalog, plus new songs and different cover songs. In addition most shows include a video performance of the amazing Ghost of Stephen Foster cartoon, created by their friends at The Simpsons.
.
All while nice waitresses bring me al th “Old Fashions” I can drink. AAaahh.

P Smoov – You Know Him or You Should

Peter “P Smoov” Robinson is one of the finest examples of a local iconoclast. He has taken what many people know of hip-hop and completely turned it on its ear. He is one half of the uber-ambitious group Fresh Espresso as well as one third of blog darlings Mad Rad in addition to creating some of the hottest beats Seattle has heard in a long time. His mastery in not only found on the boards but also in ability to destroy a mic and stage with reckless abandon. I’ve know Peter for several years now and find it amazing that he went from studio rat to stage impresario in a relatively short period of time, showing skills it generally takes years to hone in the past year of party rocking. You may know the stage version of Smoov but that is just the tip of the iceberg. He runs one of the most influential studios outside of the big three (Boiler Room, Pharmacy, and Undercaste) helping innumerable local artists find “the sound” on a shoe string budget. The 48 hour beat making sessions are paying off though as his placements increase and his creativity found new limits to test. Over the next few weeks I will be back with two more parts of the P Smoov puzzle hoping to get everyone familiar with his unique form of genius. Meanwhile you can check him out with Mad Rad or Fresh playing all over the town.

Illinois, Keenan Bell, & C-Leb & A-Bro tonight @ The Sunset
So I know what Kevin’s gonna say…
.
“Sure C you don’t post shit for months and then slap your f’n band flyer up at the last minute to try and pull heads on a Tuesday night?” Well… yes… but not completly. Both of the other acts on the bill are are really good and on a national tour promoting Illinois latest album “The Adventures of Kid Catastrophe.” The other act is Kennan Bell, an L.A. rapper supporting the Illinois tour. Illinois was just recently in the KEXP studio’s at SXSW, and this looks to be a great show tonight, regardless of how late I posted the show… or what Kevin says.
You can get tickets here or at the door…
Luv ya Kev…

Sam Roberts Band @ High Dive

We all know bands from the U.S. get over the top support in other countries. Let’s show some love back. Sam Roberts Band is big in Canada. The indie rock band has won a couple of Juno awards and their 2008 album had the number one position on the Canadian album chart.
.
So, they must be playing somewhere huge in America right? Well, they’re at the High Dive tonight for 8 bucks! I heard they had a Beatles-like sound so, I started listening to the music and they definitely have a good sound. Go and support you neighbors to the north!

The Republic Tigers @ Showbox

So another band that happens to be from my home town of Kansas City is coming to Seattle. I had heard that the last time Republic Tigers where in Seattle that it was all Kansas City kids at the show who knew of them from back home. Of course that was before they had made their T.V. debut on David Letterman. Their big song is “Buildings and Mountains” which was picked up by Itunes Indie Spotlight for Alt/Rock is just the tip of the iceberg for their style of music on their album “Keep Color”. They are currently on tour with Travis. This is going to be a really good show. These guys are fantastic musicians and their live show is full of energy. I highly recommend that you make your way down to Showbox on April 5th.

Black Joe Lewis is baaaddaassssss…
Continuing the trend of taking a cool vintage style and laying in a heavy dose of bad assery, Black Joe Lewis and the Honeybears have created something straight from a James Brown wet dream. Their debut album, “Tell ‘Em What Your Name Is”, released on March 17th, is a full-tilt groove-laden boogie down production of old vs new including funky originals and some obscure blues covers. They are currently on a nationwide tour that ends in a series of Pac NW shows. One here in Seattle on May 22 at the Tractor, one in Vancouver BC, and one at the Wild Buffalo in B-HAm in the 24th. For a full taste of the album check their Myspace. For a dose of the live isht check this out! Good Gawd Aaawmighty!

In Case You Were Wondering…
…what great big tools Kevin and I are in “real life” (face it, people, the internet is fake), then head on over to Seattle Show Gal’s Sub Blog for a little Q&A with the two of us. If you don’t quickly feel nausea from the general nerdiness—mostly mine, leDoux plays it pretty cool—then congratulations. That’s because Nikki (the Show Gal) did a pretty fucking amazing job of turning a trainwreck into a fun little balloon ride. The RATATAT soundtrack is an extra plus. She may have a career in film editing if she gets bored with reviewing ridiculous amounts of shows all the time. Check her main site for a practical take on local bands and Seattle show-going (rating systems included!). And if you’re wondering what a “sub” blog is, you’ll have to ask her—I only know about regular blogs.
.
I don’t have the guts to embed the video, so head here to watch. Kev, feel free to go ahead with that if you so choose.
.
File this under “BLOG ABOUT ME!” and “Masochistic Tendencies”.
