A few things I’ve learned recently about Beating Back the Claws of the Cold, the newish album from the Pica Beats:
.
a) It’s currently one of two records I can’t stop listening to (along side, if you care, Merriweather Post Pavilion), laden with slow-woven musical tapestries, spectral background melodies, swirling sitar, quiet guitar, and an undeniable penchant for making one’s head spin.
.
b) I’ve decided, in rudimentary terms, that head honcho R. Barrett evokes thoughts of Colin Meloy by-way-of Neil Young with his semi-warbley voice and intricate stories. I do not care for the Decemberists, but Mr. Young can count my chickens any day.
.
c) If one has a fancy for either Neutral Milk Hotel or (Zach Condon’s) Beirut, I can’t imagine one not enjoying this affecting, dynamic record.
.
d) It will be (mostly) played at the Comet Tavern this Saturday with one of my favorite local bands, the Purrs, who might never bust it big, but certainly deserve your drunken fistful of dollars should you be wandering down Pike St. that particular evening. Plus, said honcho Barrett told me that he’d even lug his signature sitar along to appease those drunken requests.
