Sweet Shows This Weekend

February 19th, 2009

Not sure if you people check the calendar or not, but here are a few attendance-worthy shows this weekend that didn’t quite make it up there:

.

Tonight (2/19):

FREE Show @ Chop Suey

Billy The Fridge
Jay Barz
Cancer Rising
DJ Marc Sence
9 pm / 21+

My recommendation is that you get to see Cancer Rising for free. Woo hoo!

.

Friday (2/20)

The Dutchess & the Duke @ Showbox Sodo

The Sodo version of the Showbox is booking shows in the lounge and the first one that caught my eye was tD & tD. They’re awesome.

.

w/ Black Whales & Meth Teeth (PDX’s answer to SEA’s beloved noiseniks, the Intelligence), two excellent bands in their own right.

8 pm / 21+ / $10

.

Romance, Born Anchors, Venus Verse @ the Comet

Portland’s the Prids were supposed to play this post-punk revival show, but their drummer dislocated his shoulder or something. WTF? You might recall the ridiculous van accident they had on tour last year. Talk about tough luck. The lineup is definitely still worth seeing, however, with 80′s new-wave romantics, uh, Romance, playing with the LB-endorsed Venus Verse. Check out some new music from VV here.

.

If you’ll be in Austin for SXSW this year, you can catch both Romance and the Prids at post-punk.com’s SXSW showcase March 19th at the Spider House Cafe.

.

9 pm / 21+ / $7

.

Point Juncture, WA, Hotels, Animals At Night @ the Sunset

Point Juncture, WA is, in fact, from PDX and is re-releasing their excellent new record, Heart to Elk, on Seattle’s Mt. Fuji Records (owned/operated by Michael Jaworski of the Cops). Look for this to be the second well-received album (which reminds me, actually, of Broken Social Scene quite a bit) put out by Mt. Fuji this year, along with Hello From Radio Wasteland by the Whore Moans. Listen to Heart to Elk in its entirety on PJWA’s website (click on ‘Music’…duh), or catch them at the Ballard Sonic Boom at 6 pm before the show for free.

.

10 pm / 21+ / $8

.

Update: The Valley is playing a FREE show with Dead Confederate up at Stevens Pass on Friday (2/20). All ages. More info here.

.

    Man!
Can’t believe all the great music happening this weekend here in the Emerald city.
Saturday night alone, I’m torn between L
airs Club and Blood Red Dancers that the Bit,
    Sound Off at EMP,
    Tiny Vipers at Cairo,
    and unpacking my new house.
    Think I’ll go with a, b or c
