Oldominion Have a Blast!
February 5th, 2009
Last Saturday night, I headed out with a large contingent of friends to Neumo’s to see the Oldominion 10th Anniversary show (you know, the one I wrote about last week). With a bill like the Saturday Knights and Grayskul, there is no way I was going to be let down. And yet, with such high expectations, I was absolutely blown away!
.
We got there just before Grayskul, and although I had seen Onry and JFK take to the stage on many occasions before, there was something special in the air this night! At this point, the place was only about 2/3 full, and yet they proceeded to rock it like there were people hanging from the rafters (and I must say that it was good to see them in the Neumo’s atmosphere with all of the lights and great sound). After they brought the crowd to a fever with the hits off of Bloody Radio, it was time for the Saturday Knights to take a swing at the frenzied masses.
.
The crowd was ready to go, and as soon as Barfly, Tilson, and friends hopped up there, the place began to explode. I’ve seen the Saturday Knights repeatedly, and was even present at the record release show on my birthday that was completely off the hook, but this time they seemed to be having more fun! From the beginning they had the crowd bouncing along (and amazed at Barfly’s Ron Jeremy-style mustache) and the Pistol Pete lookin’ guitar player shredded on his axe like there was no tomorrow (and, as a keyboard player, I have to say the sweet sounds of an Organ, although electronically produced, were sublime). Even the few friends who I brought along who weren’t in to hip hop were gettin’ down.
.
Finally, once the Saturday Knights finished, twenty some odd emcees from Oldominion took to the stage and proceeded to put on one of the best hip hop performances that I have ever seen. Emcee after emcee took the mic and rocked it, and there wasn’t a bad one in the bunch. If this ever happens again (Oldominion 15 year Anniversary?) you do not want to miss it. Until then, just go support the acts on their own and you can at least get a taste of what we got on Saturday!
