The Effects of 333

October 31st, 2008

In a cryptic message to their fans entitled The Effects of 333, L.A. band Black Rebel Motorcycle Club revealed little more than a picture (presumably an album cover) and a title. Five days later on October 29th, we were informed that they had a digital-only, instrumental record in the works to be released the day after Halloween. And with a bevy of ’3s’ as its thematic premise.

Seeing as how I’m a fairly avid fan of both BRMC and Halloween (though the jerk-off who jacked my candy on Prospect St. in 1989 spoiled it for awhile), I found quite pleasing this odd, yet tantalizing news about a fully instrumental album to be dropped on el Dia de los Muertos (that’s All Saints’ Day to you Christians). The record will in fact be entitled The Effects of 333 (your guess is as good as mine) and the theme of 3′s doesn’t stop there: according to the band, at precisely 3:33am on November 1st, the album will be available for download exclusively from the band’s website, and 3 people will be chosen to have a “private video chat/interview” with Peter Hayes that will take place on the 333rd day of the year. Whoa. And, apparently, the record has been “in the works for the last 3 years at least”. I think that’s all the 3s. Maybe they’ll only allow 333,333 copies of it, or maybe they used only 3 guitars (not likely), or maybe they drank 3 shots of whiskey before each take; who knows. But since I’ve never been disappointed by anything the band has produced, to this I creepily look forward.

It is interesting, though, how bands keep reinventing ways to release records in this era of anti-privacy and information overload. Robert and Peter will use their newly minted label Abstract Dragon to circulate this endeavour, and there won’t be a physical copy to purchase. For someone haplessly stuck in the CD-age, I hope that changes down the road.

Read the band’s full blog entry, with tracklist, after the jump.

At exactly 3:33am visit our official site for the exclusive access to the digital download of ‘The Effects Of 333′. A new album by BRMC featuring ten new instrumental/ambient tracks.

Released independently of any record company, it will be available as a digital download only through our new music store. For more information click here.

We are proud to announce our first release independent of any record company. As our first release through our Abstract Dragon label, this record is exactly that – no lyrics, no apologies, no regrets, just abstract. This has been in the works for the last 3 years at least, on and off the road, in hotel rooms, bus bunks, and back stage.

Great find Lord Bison. I look forward to this. Luckily, I’m fairly flexible and have the means to enjoy this digital music that you speak of.

Yes, well, I’ve heard you are quite flexible. And to clarify, I too am able to enjoy digital music, just reluctantly I guess. I like things I can touch.
