Built to Spill Tonight @ Showbox

September 4th, 2008

My toes are a’tappin’ at the prospect of the Built to Spill show tonight. Though they are only touring to play their 1997 prophetically-titled major label debut (and near-masterpiece), “Perfect From Now On”, I am really eager to revisit that record. In 1998, I carried a tape of PFNO with me throughout a backpacking trip across Europe for 3 months, so with those memories attached to “Perfect”, I look … forward…. to the … flashbacks (?) the album’s performance will bring. Whoa, far out.
Here’s a flashback: the last time I saw BtS was under a big white tent next to the Pyramid Brewery on a cold winter night and some girls were pouring Snowcap into my face that was being delivered through an ice sculpture. This didn’t dilute the fact that the band banged out a long, crowd-pleasing set, nor that Doug Martsch has penned some of my most favorite lyrics in music:

“No one wants to know what you dreamt / Unless you dreamt about them” – “Made Up Dreams”, on “Perfect From Now On”

“When not being stupid / Is not enough” – From the Caustic Resin EP

“I want to see the movies of my dreams.” – “Car”

Actually pretty much “Car” in its entirety:
“You get the car / i’ll get the night off / you’ll get the chance / to take the world apart
and figure out how it works / don’t let me know what you find out
i need a car / you need a guy / who needs a map? “

The Universal, another Idaho band, will be opening tonight. I expect great things. Any other fans out there with memorable lyrics?

Thanks, LB, for the supplementary material. It’s fitting that 50-100% of the comments thus far disagree with the ever-polarizing, self-aggrandizing, now-refugee Everett True. I can’t decide why to dislike him most.

Untrustable is my favorite. Speaks the words I wish I could string together.
