Deerhunter Posts 5 Tracks Off Forthcoming Microcastle LP
June 4th, 2008
Any Deerhunter fans out there? Yeah? Good, cuz you, my friend, are in luck. The band has posted 5 new tracks (!) off their forthcoming LP, Microcastles. Apparently, the band’s third record isn’t set to be released for another six months, but there are rumors that much of it has been leaked. This could be a preemptive strike to that catastrophe. “Catastrophe?!” you say? Man, if I was in a band, I would hate that shit.

Anyway, I’m a bit of a Johnny-come-lately to Deerhunter, only discovering them late last year, when Cryptograms pretty much blew me away. That record, which still gets regular play in my pick-up, is a dichotomy of styles. Every other track is an ambient wash of noise and shoegaze, while the other songs are more customarily structured as punky, harmonious, and clattering rock songs (“Heatherwood” and “Spring Hall Convert” are above great).

Upon first listen to these five new tunes, it would seem that the band has taken a slightly different approach. Instead of the abstract guitar work, there is more of a consistent lo-fi, groovy feel—a la the Velvet Underground—with a brighter disposition to boot. The production is a bit cleaner and Bradford Cox’s delicate vocals hover a little more out in front than before. In short, really good; check it out.

I culled a tentative full track listing from the interweb, after the jump.
