Blake/e/e/e at Comet Sunday May 11th

May 10th, 2008

blake3sThis Sunday, May 11th, Blake/e/e/e come through on their tour backing their debut release Boarder Radio (Freefolk). One look at the credits for the album tells you this is a different type of band, Their instrument list reads as such:

“They play: vocals, bass, guitars, banjo, organ, mandolin, drums, drum machine, steel drum, derbouka, oud, slide whistle, broken cymbals, triangle, floor toms, pedals, e-bow, tamburines.”

There isn’t anybody assigned to any specific instrument which leads me to believe that they can each cover all of them. This type of band cohesion tends to create an ocean of styles that can be drawn from. Their album, Boarder Radio, tells this tale loud and clear. It begins with a song called Holy Dub, which as it’s name states, is a drifting dub style loop welcoming you in.. then whack comes New Millenium’s Lack of Self Explanation. (listen to it below). It’s like a 5 story building falling down one wall at a time, complete with the eerie silence that follows.

Boarder Radio’s release was postponed until the 20th of May, but you can catch them Sunday night here. The rest of the line up for the night looks almost as interesting and diverse as the album itself

Check out the line-up here

I’ll be sippin MGD at the front.

They sound pretty interesting, but I have to ask, what’s the deal with that name??

Hey Kevin how was the show? I must say the label on “Blakey”s myspace of ‘experimental gospel dub’ piqued my interest.

It was very hurried, but good. They were placed second on the bill and kept getting hassled by the staff to wrap it up, they slipped in “one more” under the gun and drug it out with an 8-9 minute ambient song. Kinda funny overall. They have such a variety of sound that you’re bound to find something you like if you don’t like it all…

I really liked their CD and would have liked to check them out but it was a Sunday. And I also met my music quota for the week with minus the bear.
